How Retride Works: BHB Salts, Ketosis and What Studies Show
Retride is 2 capsules a day with a 60 mg blend of magnesium, calcium and sodium BHB, paired on the label with a 70/25/5 keto diet. BHB salts are meant to raise blood ketones. Human studies used 10 to 24 g a day, about 170 to 400 times more, and found only modest ketone rises and no clear extra weight loss.
How does Retride work, according to its label?
Two capsules a day, a 60 mg BHB blend and a keto diet target.

The Retride label gives a simple plan. Take two capsules daily with an 8 oz. glass of water. Each serving holds a 60 mg proprietary blend of three ketone salts: magnesium, calcium and sodium beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB).
The label also gives a diet target. It says that for best results in achieving ketosis, aim for 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbohydrates. So the brand pairs the capsules with a keto-style way of eating.
This page walks through what BHB salts are supposed to do, step by step, and then what human studies actually found. You can check the full panel on the Retride Supplement Facts page.
What BHB salts in Retride are supposed to do, step by step
Five steps in the story, and where the evidence stops.
Keto pill makers describe a chain of events. Each step sounds simple. Below, every step shows the idea first and then what research says about it.
- 1
You swallow BHB
The idea: BHB salts dissolve and reach your blood. Studies: yes, BHB is absorbed, but the tested doses were 10 to 24 g a day.
- 2
Blood ketones rise
The idea: you get a ketone boost. Studies: big salt drinks raised blood BHB to about 1.0 mM, well short of an ester drink (Stubbs et al., 2017).
- 3
Body burns fat
The idea: ketones flip you into fat burning. Studies: added BHB gives the body ketones to use; it does not make the liver burn more fat.
- 4
Hunger drops
The idea: less appetite. Studies: an ester drink cut hunger for a few hours; salts were not tested for this in the trials we found (Stubbs et al., 2018 (ketone ESTER)).
- 5
Weight falls
The idea: faster weight loss. Studies: no clear extra loss over placebo, even at gram doses (Buga et al., 2021; Roeth et al., 2025).
The keto pill story, checked against human studies
| Step in the story | What studies show | Dose tested |
|---|---|---|
| Ketones rise | Peak about 1.0 mM blood D-BHB with salts | About 12–24 g per drink |
| Blood sugar dips | About 0.54 mmol/L lower short term; salts weaker than esters (Falkenhain et al., 2022) | Grams, single doses |
| Appetite falls | Shown for a ketone ester, not for salts | Ester raised BHB to 3.3 mM |
| Extra weight loss | 7.3 kg salts vs 8.0 kg placebo | About 24 g a day, 6 weeks |
| Extra weight loss | 3.05 kg vs 1.51 kg, not significant | 10 g a day |
What is BHB, and how does the body make ketones on its own?
Your liver makes BHB when carbs run low.
BHB is the main ketone body. Your liver makes it from fat when carbohydrate is scarce, such as during fasting or a very low-carb diet. Your brain and muscles can then use it for fuel.
This state is called nutritional ketosis. It begins when carbohydrate drops under about 50 g a day, roughly 20 to 50 g on a 2,000-calorie diet (StatPearls, Ketogenic Diet, 2023). That is why diet, not a capsule, is the main switch.
A BHB salt is that same ketone bound to a mineral. In Retride the minerals are magnesium, calcium and sodium. Read more on the BHB ketones page.
Made by you
Low carb intake makes the liver produce BHB from stored and eaten fat.
Taken in
BHB salts add ketones from outside. Doses in studies were measured in grams.
Ketone esters
A different form that raises blood BHB more than salts in head-to-head tests.

How much BHB is in Retride compared with research doses?
Milligrams on the label, grams in the studies.
The whole BHB blend is 60 mg per 2-capsule serving. Human ketone-salt studies used about 10 to 24 grams of BHB a day, roughly 170 to 400 times more. No study we found tested a dose close to 60 mg.
The bars below show each daily dose on the same scale. The Retride bar is so small it needs a minimum width just to be seen.
Daily BHB salt dose, Retride label vs human studies (24 g = full bar)
Put simply, 10 g is about 170 times 60 mg, and 24 g is 400 times. Even those large doses gave modest ketone levels. This is the single most useful fact for judging any low-dose keto pill, and our keto pills research review covers it in more depth.
Do BHB salts like those in Retride put you in ketosis?
Short answer: not at this dose, and only briefly at study doses.
Large doses can raise blood ketones for a while, but that is not the same as the body making its own. In Stubbs et al., 2017, ketone salt drinks peaked at about 1.0 mM of blood D-BHB. A ketone ester drink reached about 2.8 mM.
The salts in that study were about half L-BHB, a form the body handles differently. Each drink also carried 1.6 to 3.2 g of each mineral, which is a lot of sodium or potassium in one go.
With 60 mg in a serving, Retride cannot match those numbers. If you want ketosis, cutting carbohydrate is the proven route. Our salts vs esters article explains the difference.
Does Retride burn fat or curb appetite? What research says
Weight trials found no clear edge for BHB salts.
Two randomized trials gave people gram doses of BHB salts and measured weight. Neither found a clear extra benefit over placebo.
Weight trials with BHB salts
| Study | Daily BHB salt dose | Diet | Weight result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buga et al., 2021 | About 24 g | Low-calorie keto | 7.3 kg salts vs 8.0 kg placebo, no difference |
| Roeth et al., 2025 | 10 g | About 500 kcal deficit | 3.05 kg vs 1.51 kg, not significant (p = 0.09) |
The appetite story comes from a ketone ester, not salts. One ester drink raised blood BHB to 3.3 mM and lowered hunger hormones for a few hours in 15 adults (Stubbs et al., 2018 (ketone ESTER)). It did not measure weight.
The NIH notes that little is known about whether weight-loss supplements work (NIH ODS Weight-loss supplements fact sheet). Lifestyle change is still the base of lasting weight loss. See the Retride benefits page for each label claim in turn.
Why the keto diet on the Retride label matters most
Carb restriction drives ketosis; the capsules ride along.
The label's 70/25/5 split is close to the usual keto range. Typical keto plans use 70 to 80% fat, 5 to 10% carbohydrate and 10 to 20% protein (Harvard Nutrition Source, Ketogenic Diet review, 2025). The label's 25% protein sits a little above that range.
Across 13 trials of a year or more, keto diets beat low-fat diets by about 0.91 kg on average (Bueno et al., 2013). That is a modest edge, and it came from the diet alone.

Retride how-it-works questions
How does Retride work?
The Retride label says to take 2 capsules a day with water and pair them with a keto-style diet. Each serving holds a 60 mg blend of magnesium, calcium and sodium BHB, a ketone the body also makes on its own. No study has tested this formula, so the label claims are the brand's words.
How do keto pills work?
Keto pills usually contain BHB salts, a ketone bound to a mineral. The idea is that swallowing BHB raises blood ketones. Studies show this happens only with doses of many grams, and even then blood ketones rise modestly and for a short time.
Does Retride put you in ketosis?
Not on its own, as far as research shows. Ketosis mainly starts when you eat less than about 50 g of carbohydrate a day. Retride holds 60 mg of BHB per serving, far below the 10 to 24 g a day used in human studies.
Do keto pills work for weight loss?
Current research does not show extra weight loss from BHB salts. In one trial, people on a keto diet lost 7.3 kg with ketone salts and 8.0 kg with a placebo. Another trial found a gap that was not statistically significant.
Can I take keto pills without the diet?
You can, but there is little reason to expect results. The Retride label itself links the capsules to a diet of 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbohydrate. The diet is what drives ketosis.
What is the difference between BHB salts and ketone esters?
BHB salts bind the ketone to a mineral like sodium or magnesium. Esters bind it to an alcohol. In one study, salt drinks raised blood BHB to about 1.0 mM, while an ester drink reached about 2.8 mM.
How long does it take for Retride to work?
No timeline is published or promised. The sales page asks for at least 30 days of use, and the money-back window is 60 days. Most changes in a keto routine come from the diet over weeks.
Is Retride FDA approved?
No. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold. The Retride label says it is made in an FDA-registered facility, which is a different thing from approval.
Are BHB salts the same as the ketones my body makes?
Partly. The body makes D-BHB. Many BHB salts are a mix of D and L forms, and one study found its salts were about half L-BHB. Whether the BHB in Retride is D-form or a mix is not published.
