BHB Salts vs Ketone Esters: Blood Levels, D vs L BHB, Side Effects and Cost

Quick answer

Ketone esters raise blood ketones far more than BHB salts: about 2.8 to 3.3 mM versus about 1.0 mM with 12 to 24 gram salt drinks. Salts are often half L-BHB and carry grams of minerals at study doses, which can upset the stomach. Neither form has been shown to cause weight loss. Compare products by price per gram of BHB.

Overview

BHB salts vs esters: what are exogenous ketones?

Exogenous ketones are ketones you take in from outside, instead of ones your liver makes. Almost all of them are forms of BHB, short for beta-hydroxybutyrate. They come in two main types: salts and esters.

The table puts the key differences side by side. Each row is explained further down.

What are BHB salts, like the ones in Retride?

A BHB salt is BHB bound to a mineral. The mineral keeps it stable as a dry powder that fits in a capsule. When the salt dissolves in your gut, the BHB and the mineral are absorbed separately.

Retride uses three salts: magnesium BHB, calcium BHB and sodium BHB, listed together as a 60 mg proprietary blend per two-capsule serving. The split between them is not published. Each salt has its own page: magnesium BHB, calcium BHB and sodium BHB.

Esters

What are ketone esters?

A ketone ester links BHB to an alcohol-like molecule instead of a mineral. After you drink it, your body splits the ester and releases BHB into the blood.

Because there is no mineral attached, you can take a larger ketone dose without a mineral load. In one study, a single ester drink raised blood BHB from 0.2 to 3.3 mM within 60 minutes (Stubbs et al., 2018 (ketone ESTER)).

A 2025 review of studies in adults with disease concluded that esters appear better than salts for reaching ketosis that people tolerate (Mohib et al., 2025). The esters in these studies were given as drinks.

D vs L

D-BHB vs L-BHB: why the form matters

BHB comes in two mirror-image forms, like a left and right hand. Your body makes D-BHB, and that is the form blood ketone tests read.

Many salts are made as a mix of both. In the Stubbs study, the salt drinks were about half L-BHB (Stubbs et al., 2017). The reported D-BHB peaks did not include that L half, and less is known about what the body does with it.

The natural form your liver makes. Blood ketone meters measure it.

The mirror form. Found in some salt blends. It does not show up on a standard D-BHB reading.

The label does not say which form it uses. Whether the BHB is the D-form or a D/L mix is not published.

When you compare products, look for a label that names the form. "D-BHB" or "R-BHB" tells you more than "BHB" alone.

Blood levels

Which raises blood ketones more: BHB salts or esters?

Esters, by a wide margin. In a head-to-head test, ester drinks raised blood D-BHB to about 2.8 mM. Salt drinks with about 12 to 24 grams of BHB peaked near 1.0 mM (Stubbs et al., 2017).

BHB salt drink≈1.0 mM12–24 g, Stubbs 2017
Ketone ester drink≈2.8 mMStubbs 2017
Ketone ester drink3.3 mMStubbs 2018

A review of exogenous ketone studies found a similar pattern for blood sugar. Ketones lowered glucose by about 0.54 mmol/L in the short term, with monoesters more effective than salts. Evidence for longer use was limited (Falkenhain et al., 2022).

Higher blood ketones do not mean more fat loss. Swallowed ketones are fuel from outside, not fat from your body.

Gut and minerals

BHB salts side effects: stomach upset and mineral load

Both types mostly caused mild gut symptoms in tests, such as nausea and diarrhea. Dose made a big difference. High-dose salt drinks had a symptom load of 13.8 versus 2.0 for low-dose salt drinks (Stubbs et al., 2019).

Salts also bring minerals. Each study drink carried 1.6 to 3.2 grams of each mineral, such as sodium (Stubbs et al., 2017). For scale, the daily sodium guideline is under 2,300 mg (FDA, Sodium in Your Diet, 2024), and the upper limit for magnesium from supplements is 350 mg a day (NIH ODS Magnesium fact sheet, 2026).

Mineral load at study doses vs a 60 mg blend

Because the whole Retride blend is 60 mg, its minerals are necessarily under 60 mg. That is small next to daily limits. If you have kidney disease or watch your sodium, ask your doctor about any mineral supplement.

Cost

How to compare cost: price per gram of BHB, with Retride as an example

The fairest way to compare ketone products is price per gram of BHB. Prices per bottle hide how much ketone you actually get.

Here is the math for Retride at the 6-bottle price from the sales pack. Confirm prices at checkout.

30 × 60 mgservings per bottle= 1.8 gBHB blend per bottle≈ $27per gram at $49

One 12 g study drink would equal about 200 Retride servings. We do not have verified prices for ester drinks, so we do not quote them here. Use the same steps for any product: price, divided by total grams on the label.

Choosing

Salts or esters: which should you choose, and where does Retride fit?

If your goal is a high blood ketone reading for a few hours, esters did that best in studies. If you want a simple capsule, salts are the usual choice, with a lower ketone rise.

Neither form has been shown to cause weight loss. The keto diet itself, cutting carbs below about 50 grams a day, is what drives ketosis.

Retride is a low-dose salt capsule: two capsules a day with water, 60 mg of BHB blend per serving. Its claims are the brand's words and have not been evaluated by the FDA.

  • Read the BHB amount. Look for mg or g per serving, not just a blend name.
  • Check the form. A label that says D-BHB tells you more than one that says BHB.
  • Count the minerals. At gram doses, salts add real sodium, calcium or magnesium.
  • Work out price per gram. It is the only fair way to compare a capsule with a drink.
  • Plan the diet first. Carbs under about 50 g a day do the heavy lifting.

FAQ

BHB salts vs esters questions

What is the difference between BHB salts and ketone esters?

BHB salts bind the ketone BHB to a mineral such as sodium, calcium or magnesium. Ketone esters bind it to an alcohol instead. Esters raised blood ketones much higher in head-to-head tests.

Which raises ketones more, salts or esters?

Esters. In one study, ester drinks lifted blood D-BHB to about 2.8 mM, while salt drinks peaked near 1.0 mM. A separate ester study reached 3.3 mM within an hour.

What is D-BHB vs L-BHB?

They are mirror-image forms of the same molecule. Your body makes D-BHB, the form ketone meters read. The salts in one study were about half L-BHB, which did not show up in the D-BHB results.

Is the BHB in Retride D or L?

Not published. The Retride label lists magnesium, calcium and sodium BHB in a 60 mg blend but does not say whether the BHB is the D-form or a D/L mix.

Do BHB salts cause stomach upset?

They can at study doses. Ketone drinks mostly caused mild gut symptoms like nausea and diarrhea, and high-dose salt drinks caused about seven times the symptom load of low-dose ones.

Do BHB salts raise blood pressure?

No trial in our sources measured that. Large salt doses do carry a lot of sodium, up to several grams per drink, so people watching sodium should ask a doctor. A 60 mg blend holds far less.

Are ketone esters better for weight loss?

There is no good evidence either form causes weight loss. Esters lowered hunger for a few hours in one study, but weight was not measured.

Do I need exogenous ketones on a keto diet?

No. A keto diet makes ketones on its own once carbs drop below about 50 grams a day. Exogenous ketones are optional, and trials have not shown they add weight loss to the diet.

Are BHB salts the same as keto pills?

Most keto pills are BHB salts in capsules. Retride is one example, with a 60 mg salt blend per two-capsule serving.

How do I compare the cost of ketone supplements?

Work out the price per gram of BHB. Divide the price by the grams of BHB the label lists for the whole container, then compare that with the grams used in studies.
