Do Keto Pills Work? What BHB Studies Show, With or Without a Keto Diet
Not on their own, based on current trials. People taking 10 to 24 grams a day of BHB salts lost no significantly more weight than people on placebo. Ketosis comes mainly from cutting carbs below about 50 grams a day. Retride's label blend is 60 mg per serving, far below study doses, so the diet matters more than any pill.
What are keto pills and what is in them?
Keto pills are dietary supplements sold to people on, or thinking about, a keto diet. Most contain BHB salts. BHB stands for beta-hydroxybutyrate, the main ketone your liver makes when carbohydrate is low.
In a pill, BHB is bound to a mineral so it stays stable as a powder. That gives you sodium BHB, calcium BHB, magnesium BHB or potassium BHB. Many labels list them as a blend with one total amount.
How to read a typical keto pill label
| What you see on the label | What it means |
|---|---|
| BHB salts or beta-hydroxybutyrate | A ketone bound to a mineral |
| Proprietary blend | One total for the mix; each part is not shown |
| "Supports ketosis" with an asterisk | A brand claim the FDA has not evaluated |
| Amount in mg per serving | The number to compare with studies, which used grams |
The Retride label is a good example. It lists a 60 mg proprietary blend of magnesium, calcium and sodium BHB per two-capsule serving. Our supplement facts page walks through every line.

How are keto pills like Retride supposed to work?
The idea is simple. If the body runs on ketones during ketosis, swallowing ketones might push you toward ketosis faster or help you stay there. The steps below show the theory and where it gets thin.
- 1
You swallow BHB
The salt dissolves and BHB is absorbed from the gut.
- 2
Blood ketones rise
Big doses raise blood BHB for a short time, then it falls.
- 3
Cells burn BHB
Muscle, heart and brain can use BHB for fuel.
- 4
The open question
Burning swallowed ketones is not the same as burning body fat.
That last step matters most. When your body makes ketones, it makes them from stored fat. When you swallow them, you add fuel from outside. Whether that leads to fat loss is a question for trials, not theory.

Do keto pills work for weight loss? What the studies show
So far, no. Two controlled trials gave people large daily doses of BHB salts for weeks. Neither found a significant weight difference compared with placebo.
BHB salt studies in people
| Study | BHB dose | Setting | Weight result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buga et al., 2021 | About 24 g a day | Keto diet with fewer calories, 6 weeks | 7.3 kg with salts vs 8.0 kg placebo, no difference |
| Roeth et al., 2025 | 10 g a day | About 500 kcal a day deficit | 3.05 vs 1.51 kg, not significant (p = 0.09) |
| Stubbs et al., 2017 | About 12–24 g per drink | Single drinks, no weight measure | Blood BHB peaked near 1.0 mM |
Weight change in the two BHB salt trials
The Roeth trial was industry-funded, and its gap did not reach statistical significance. The broader picture matches the NIH view: little is known about whether weight-loss supplements work (NIH ODS Weight-loss supplements fact sheet).
Can you take keto pills without the keto diet?
You can, but the diet is what creates ketosis. Ketosis starts when carbohydrate drops below about 50 grams a day, roughly 20 to 50 grams on a 2,000 calorie diet (StatPearls, Ketogenic Diet, 2023). A typical keto diet gets 70 to 80% of calories from fat and only 5 to 10% from carbs (Harvard Nutrition Source, Ketogenic Diet review, 2025).
Without that change, a pill adds a little ketone fuel for a short time. It does not switch your body into fat-burning mode. That is why claims like "lose weight without dieting" are on the FTC's list of false promises (FTC, The Truth Behind Weight Loss Ads, 2025).
The diet raises ketones on its own. Over 12 months or more, keto diets gave 0.91 kg more weight loss than low-fat diets on average (Bueno et al., 2013). A pill was not part of those trials.
Blood ketones rise briefly after a large salt dose, then fall. No trial has shown weight loss from BHB salts on a normal diet.
The Retride label itself says that for best results in achieving ketosis, aim for a 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbohydrate diet. The diet comes first even there.
Our keto diet guide shows how to plan those first weeks.
Do keto pills curb appetite and cravings?
The best appetite data is for ketone esters, not salts. In one study, a ketone ester drink raised blood BHB to 3.3 mM and lowered hunger and the hunger hormone ghrelin for a few hours compared with a sugar drink (Stubbs et al., 2018 (ketone ESTER)).
That study tested an ester, at a much higher ketone level than salts reach, and it did not measure weight. The salt trials above did not report appetite as a main result.
So an appetite claim on a salt pill rests on indirect evidence. Our article on BHB salts vs ketone esters explains why the two behave so differently.
Are keto pills safe? Side effects to know
At study doses, BHB salts mostly caused mild stomach symptoms, such as nausea and diarrhea. High-dose salt drinks caused more symptoms than low-dose ones (Stubbs et al., 2019).
Large salt doses also carry a lot of minerals. One study drink held 1.6 to 3.2 grams of each mineral, such as sodium (Stubbs et al., 2017). The daily sodium guideline is under 2,300 mg (FDA, Sodium in Your Diet, 2024).
At 60 mg, the minerals in Retride's blend are tiny by comparison. The label still says pregnant or nursing women, anyone under 18 and anyone with a medical condition should ask a physician first. See side effects for more.

How to judge any keto pill before you buy, Retride included
Use the same checks for every brand, including ours. A good label and an honest seller should pass most of them.
- The label shows the BHB amount per serving in mg or gCheck
- You can compare that amount with study doses of 10–24 g a dayCheck
- Claims carry the FDA asterisk and say "supports", not "cures"Check
- The ad says you will lose weight without diet or exerciseRed flag
- It claims a Shark Tank or celebrity endorsementRed flag
- A "free trial" asks for your cardRed flag
- The seller lists a phone number, address and refund termsCheck
The FTC expects health claims to rest on solid human trials, and testimonials cannot replace them (FTC Health Products Compliance Guidance, 2022). See how fake keto ads work for the red flags in detail.
Where does Retride fit?
Retride is a BHB salt capsule with a clear label. It is easy to take: two capsules a day with water. Here is how its dose compares.
The whole BHB blend is 60 mg per 2-capsule serving. Human ketone-salt studies used about 10 to 24 grams of BHB a day, roughly 170 to 400 times more. Even those larger doses added no clear weight loss beyond diet. So if you choose Retride, treat it as a small add-on to a planned keto diet, not the engine of it.
The label claims, such as "Supports Healthy Metabolism*", are the brand's words and have not been evaluated by the FDA. Retride has a 60-day money-back window if it is not for you. Read how Retride works for the full picture.
Keto pill questions
Do keto pills work for weight loss?
Not on their own, based on current trials. In two controlled studies, people taking 10 to 24 grams a day of BHB salts did not lose significantly more weight than people on placebo. The diet did the work in both groups.
Can I take keto pills without the diet?
You can, but there is no good evidence they do much without it. Ketosis mainly comes from cutting carbohydrate to under about 50 grams a day, and the FTC lists "lose weight without dieting" as a false promise.
How long do keto pills take to work?
No timeline is proven, because trials did not show a clear weight effect from BHB salts. A large salt drink raises blood ketones only for a short time.
Do ketone pills put you in ketosis?
Large doses can raise blood ketones for a few hours, to about 1 mM with 12 to 24 gram salt drinks. That is not the same as diet-driven ketosis, where the body makes its own ketones from fat all day.
Are keto pills safe to take?
BHB salts at study doses mostly caused mild stomach upset, such as nausea or diarrhea, and more at higher doses. Ask a doctor first if you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, have a medical condition or take medicine.
Are there FDA approved keto pills?
No. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold, so no keto pill is FDA approved. A label may say "made in an FDA-registered facility", which is about the factory, not the product.
Do keto pills work without exercise?
There is no evidence they cause weight loss without exercise or diet change. Lasting weight loss is built on what you eat and how you move, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.
How many keto pills can you take?
Take only the amount on your label. For Retride, that is two capsules daily with an 8 oz. glass of water. Taking more than the label says is not advised.
Does Retride work?
No study has tested Retride. Its label blend is 60 mg of BHB salts per serving, about 170 to 400 times less than study doses that themselves showed no clear weight effect beyond diet.
